Hoosiers Move to 4–0, But Defensive Lapses and Cold Shooting Cloud the Victory

A Hoosier’s hopeful look at the team, the tradition, and the road back

What Happened

  • The Hoosiers carried a 35-19 halftime lead but allowed the Cardinals to outscore them 42-34 in the second half. The Crimson Quarry+1
  • Offensively, Indiana’s 3-point shooting was uncharacteristically poor — just 5-24 from beyond the arc. The Crimson Quarry+1
  • They did, however, assist on 18 of 23 made field goals (approximately 78 %), showing high unselfishness in shot-creation. The Daily Hoosier+1
  • Key contributors off the bench included Sam Alexis with 16 points and eight rebounds, and freshman Trent Sisley with 10 points and eight boards. 247Sports+1
  • Defensively, IU smothered UIW in the first half (holding them to ~20.7 % field-goal shooting) but the defense loosened up in the second, allowing a 54.8 % clip. The Daily Hoosier+1

What It Means

  • Unselfishness and sharing the ball remain a hallmark of this team. Even when the shots weren’t falling from deep, those 18 assists on 23 field goals underline that this is still motion offense, not isolation basketball. That’s exactly the kind of identity fans hoped to see under Darian DeVries.
  • Effort and bench depth showed up in a meaningful way. Alexis and Sisley gave Indiana a lift when the stars struggled from distance. That kind of contribution off the bench bodes well for a season defined by team play, not just top-end talent.
  • Rebounding and defensive consistency remain concerns. The fact that UIW chipped away so effectively in the second half signals that IU still needs to lock in for 40 minutes. The identity isn’t just about offense — it’s about doing the “little things” every possession: box-outs, coverages, rotations.
  • Three-point shooting is volatile. This was one of IU’s worst nights from deep. The style calls for perimeter balance — but when the three’s not falling, the team must rely on interior execution and rebounding. Today they made it work, but it’s a reminder: the system’s success isn’t just in the looks, but in the backup plan when looks don’t drop.
  • Indiana’s identity is showing up — but not flawlessly. The “right way” is glimpsed here: sharing, effort, bench contributions, early lead. But control guard (especially on defense) and shooting consistency will be the next measure. If the Hoosiers can remain disciplined, connected and resilient, this win will serve as a building block rather than a warning sign.
