The truth of this game isn’t in the final margin. It’s in the arc of it.
Indiana didn’t walk into Breslin and get run off the floor from the opening tip. They competed. They executed early. They tied the game in the second half. For long stretches, they belonged.
And then a very good, very physical, very seasoned program took over.
That’s not new in this building. Indiana has lost by sizeable margins here before — including teams that went on to have very good seasons. East Lansing has a way of teaching you what the league demands.
What decided this game wasn’t effort. It was possession and physicality.
Michigan State won the rebounding battle 37–19, including 13 offensive boards. That’s not just a number — that’s extra lives. Extra chances. Extra momentum. It’s how a tied game becomes a run.
IU shot 10-of-31 from three, and when the shots stopped falling, there wasn’t a counter strong enough inside to keep the game from tilting. The offense tightened. Pressure turned into turnovers. Those mistakes became fast-break points. And once the run started, IU couldn’t stop it.
We’ve seen this layer before — at Kentucky, against Nebraska, and now here. IU can hang. But against the best teams in this league, hanging isn’t enough yet.
This loss isn’t a verdict on the season. It’s a lesson.
There will be better days. There will be games where the habits hold — where possessions are finished, where runs are stopped, where this team shows what it’s learning.
