The Next Test Awaits in Champaign

A Hoosier’s hopeful look at the team, the tradition, and the road back

Sunday 1 pm ET, CBS

Sunday presents one of Indiana’s toughest challenges of the season. No. 8 Illinois is physical and playing at home, where momentum builds quickly and mistakes linger longer. Like every top Big Ten team this time of year, they’re fighting for position, confidence, and identity as March approaches.

A few weeks ago, this might have felt like a mismatch. Now, it feels like a measuring stick.

Indiana has won five of its last six games, and the growth has been visible. The offense has become more connected. Interior players like Sam Alexis and Reed Bailey have found ways to contribute. Lamar Wilkerson has provided steadiness and leadership when games tighten. Most importantly, this group has learned how to respond — to adversity, to pressure, and to expectation.

That doesn’t guarantee anything Sunday. Road games like this never do.

But it changes the conversation.

This team walks into Champaign with more belief than it had a few weeks ago — and with a better understanding of what it takes to compete possession by possession in this league.

Illinois will test Indiana’s front line, their composure, and their ability to finish defensive possessions. They’ll test their discipline and their patience. They’ll test whether the progress we’ve seen lately travels against a Top 10 team.

Because that’s what games like this do. They reveal how far a team has come — and how far it can still go.

We’ll have something special to share on Facebook this weekend as we get closer to tipoff — a short reflection on what this moment means.

For now, the opportunity is clear.

Let’s see what Indiana does with it.
